avconv.exe is part of dvdstyler - a free dvd developing software. It runs as a process when you burn the dvd or create an iso. Depending on the size and quality of your video files, this can use all your cpu. It is not a virus and it is working as intended. I don't think it will run if you choose the option "don't remultiplex" but I've never tried it as I'm not sure the disc will play on my old DVD player if I do. Computers have gotten really fast over the last decade but making your own dvds is still a HUGE job so don't expect it to be fast and just set it to go and walk away and don't try to run any other programs while you're doing it. I don't know if I'm using this site as intended as I've never been on it before, but as no one else has explained what the file is or what it's for, I figured I would share the minimal knowledge I have about it, I hope it helps someone. If anyone knows more than me, please share with me.

I installed and ran Process Hacker in order to assess what application(s) had slowed my XP computer down to a crawl.
Other than a questionable run32dll.exe (which I have neutralized), the app which was negatively affecting my computer was avconv.exe.
I had never seen the file before. However, Process Hacker showed avconv.exe consumming 61% of cpu processing power - and increasing (I had up to now resorted to simply rebooting the computer, but that inconvenience is something I tolerated for a couple of days [until I had set time aside to repair the computer]).
The file shows up in Process Hacker as a child of firefox.
I recall installing and extension for the firefox plug-in Video DownloadHelper, designated, 'Video DownloadHelper Libav media converter 3.1.1'. I do recall the problem with my pc slowing down being present prior to installing the extension (though to a signifinantly lesser extent).
Navigating to the Program Files folder, in the user-designated-folder, 'Video DownloadHelper', I it contained the dreaded 'avconv.exe'.
Terminating the process with Process Hacker immediately eliminated the sluggishness from my computer.
I will remove the firefox Video DownloadHelper plug-in extension pursuant to that confirmation.
